Planning my 2013 garden and i’ll be buying a lot of seeds. Does anyone have good or bad experience in a seed buying co-op?

What is the status on the mow goats? Were the results positive (whatever results were observed)? I hesitate to say successful because with goats that can be very subjective.

Market Gardens 1 year, 1 month agoI’m buying 2,000 red wigglers (small red worms) and 250 Super red worms at Jim’s, http://unclejimswormfarm.com/
Don’t use your average night crawler: they don’t eat your organic waste. Here is all about composting with worms (vermiculture). http://www.composting101.com/worm-composting.html

Year two is looking pretty good. I replaced the three apple trees that didn’t make it through the winter and created a bed of 12 raspberry bushes down the middle of the lot between the two rows of trees. Those supplement the dozen bushes that I planted next to the garden two years ago. This year’s garden is planted with tomatoes, zucchini,…[Read more]

In reply to: Gloria Ferris posted an update in the group Native Plantings: Wondering why more people aren’t posting the progress of their projects. Asking how could we ramp up the chatter. We have 2 and a half month before […] ViewHI Gloria,
I refrained from posting during the summer because I was terribly disappointed in the City’s support of this project. Like Mom always told me ”If you don’t have anything nice to say…” -

My project is almost finished. The tractor came in and scraped the top layer of stones, then we dumped about 120 yards of “contractor mix” topsoil and the tractor spread that dirt around. My sister and her family were visiting from California so my 7th-grade niece and 9th-grade nephew helped me to set and water the 10 apple trees.
I spread the…[Read more] -

Grant Recipients: 2 years, 11 months agoFINALLY! Today is June 1 and I received official notice that my dirt is not too “dirty”. I’ve missed planting for 3 weekends now, and probably one or two more before the rocks are removed and I can put the plants in the ground. I’ll probably get a bunch of larger pots and some soil [...]

I picked up ten apple trees, 5 Jon-a-Golds and 5 Golden Delicious, packed bare root. Tipped them into the garden to keep them alive until I get my soil analysis clearance. Some of my hot peppers sprouts are about a foot high already (still in a pot in my basement), others just an inch high. Also sprouted and ready to plant are 8 tomato plants, 2…[Read more]

Dear Bob,
We would love to photograph your project at different stages of development. Could you send me a message letting me know which one it is? I couldn’t find your name on the list I have. You can use either the name or the number. Thanks very much. Helen Liggett (documentary photography group)

I picked up the 10 apple trees that ParkWorks arranged for me; bare root trees that I will keep wet until I can plant them. My cayenne peppers are sprouted from seeds from last year’s harvest, 8 tomatoes are ready to plant; carrots, cantaloupes, squash, basil, parsley and rosemary are all sprouting in my basement. I also picked up 4 cauliflower…[Read more]

Grant Recipients: 3 years agoI’m kind of surprised at what I think is a new requirement: no ground breaking until soil sample analysis is returned, reviewed and approved by a qualified City bureaucrat. This is a huge red flag for me and others who want to plant food crops. Cleveland (close to the lake) is located in Burpee’s Zone [...]

The rock is gone! Dave Reuse took it to reuse in the community garden south on 58th St. Dave also removed the mulberry roots and old fence posts. Sure beats trying to do this with a pick and shovel!
